About this deal

There were men afraid of commitment, power thirsty ones, egoistic, and all collectively felt like Kings that deserved to objectify women, use them as tools, have their way; like women were created to dance to their tunes with whatever melody as long as it suited their low desires or gave them that absurd high of being overentitled and unaccountable for their deeds. More than half of the time, women are on the receiving end of bad decisions and selfish acts by men.

Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad is a collection of twelve short stories featuring characters with unique voices and stories that represent the diverse class, gender and ethnic melting pot that is Lagos. A beautiful, touching and heartbreaking collection short stories, that might ring true for many men in Lagos but are almost all relateable to me as an Indian woman too. Lagos of the Mad: Review of Damilare Kuku's Nearly all the Men in Lagos are Mad | Melony Akpoghene".

She masterfully skewers societal norms and exposes the ridiculousness lurking beneath the surface of everyday life.

I have to say I really like Damilare's writing style and I definitely can't wait to read more from her in the future. Even her in-laws who know that the marriage only exists because Amos raped her, still accuse her to be a witch who wants to kill her own son. Honestly, the collection wasn't as diverse as I wanted it to be- but then again, the title told us exactly what to expect. It is a result of a culture of convoluted traditional ideals desperately seeking to find a place for itself in the global, "Western" cultural scene. That's the opening line of the book and through it's 12 short stories you're led through one experience after another of women from all walks of life being shown pepper and how they managed to make pepper soup or shito!

We see harrowing tales of betrayals, double-lives and hard truths, as experienced and seemln through the eyes of women who are in turn damaged, lovingly innocent, and vindictive. The stories were easy to read but the sex scenes seemed forced to me and I found them unnecessary at some point. Short stories are always a good start to get off a reading slump or ease you out of the state that heavy books leave you in.
