About this deal

It’s still as shocking today as it was all those years ago, and while the story reads like a thriller and I found myself rooting for Betty and her daughter you have to remind yourself that this nightmare was Betty’s reality at the time and certainly no thriller for her. A shockingly successful novel with a bit of exaggeration and full of revenge against the ex-husband and his family. Not Without My Daughter' Subject Grows Up, Tells Her Own Story "Not Without My Daughter" told the story of an American mother and daughter fleeing Iran. The untruths begin with the cover of the book, which features the image of a woman who is dressed in a manner which is decidedly not Iranian.

The family was a crazy one to say the least: extreme, fanatical, superstitious, and never mind disgusting with their hygiene (but let’s not go there! Moody's attitude toward Betty also changed: He forced her to abide by increasingly strict Iranian customs; he lied to her; he claimed that she was lying whenever she complained; he ignored her and their daughter for days at a time; he even blinded himself to the oppression of women in Iran. However, at the end of the two weeks, Moody decided that he, his wife and daughter would remain in Iran.In August 1984, Michigan housewife Betty Mahmoody accompanied her husband to his native Iran for a two-week vacation. She also details, in the follow up, what it was like to come back to America and try to put her life back together. It was a bit of a slug to get through at the beginning before you got into her plans and attempts to escape. There was not a single thing in the book that I could point my finger at and say: this can’t be true.

She’s seen unhappy Mahtob is with that life already and refuses to subject her daughter to more pain and misery. He directed them to an apartment where they remained for three days as Amahl completed their travel arrangements. To put it in perspective, Mahmoody co-wrote the book with William Hoffer who wrote Midnight Express, a novel that also happens to be racist and xenophobic against Turkey. They were to travel through Turkey; the smugglers would take them from Tehran to Tabriz and then to Van. It's hard to believe Betty Mahmoody and her daughter survived their ordeal, but with Mahmoody's fierce persistence, they did.
