About this deal

H.White quits his job as a schoolteacher, moves to the countryside, and gets a goshawk, which is a type of hawk, and tries to train it. The rest of the day was a glow of pleasure, a kind of still life in which the sun shone on the flowers with more than natural brilliance, giving them the high lights of porcelain. White and Cockerell first encountered each other — if that is the right word — anonymously and at a distance.

Even as "I was stroking a murderer, a savage," the bigger world around him is full of mounting violence, and of politics that pursue the kill; he concludes, "we still lived in the Middle Ages.Me being the out of touch curmudgeon that I am, I somehow managed to commit myself to the ancestral work a couple of years before the modern work came out, and true to form, didn't actually get around to reading it until just over a decade later. A particular sentence — "the bird reverted to a feral state" — seized his imagination, and, White later wrote, "A longing came to my mind that I should be able to do this myself. It is a book about failure, but I have a hard time now to explain what it is exactly that makes this such a good book, through and through English, and I like it more than H is for Hawk itself. Original unclipped dust wrapper is also smart with light shelf wear and the odd small closed tear to the extremities. White is best known for his sequence of Arthurian novels, The Once and Future King, first published together in 1958.

FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY WHITE: PERHAPS THE BEST POSSIBLE ASSOCIATION COPY, WITH A WARM AND LENGTHY INSCRIPTION TO HIS GOOD FRIEND SYDNEY COCKERELL — CONNOISEUR, BIBLIOPHILE, AND DIRECTOR OF THE FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM. Perhaps it may trigger people to really observe birds, rather than tick them and put them on a list. The visit included the first of many small bestowings — photographs, postcards, cuttings from catalogues — which Cockerell was to give him” (Warner). In typical English fashion, a hierarchy of raptors was allowed to the falconer or austringer depending on ones class; an eagle for an emperor, a peregrine for an earl, a goshawk for a yeoman, and a kestrel for a knave. It didn't quite make it to a five star for me, but it was worlds better than I expected, and when it comes to these old dead white dudes, that's oftentimes the best one can hope for.

He wants, most, to live in his cloistered cottage, to talk to hardly anyone, and — quite desperately, I believe — to belong to another time. Of course The Goshawk, first published in 1951, is timely because Macdonald wrote so perceptively about it in H is for Hawk. H. White's (1906-64), nature writing classic 'The Goshawk' asks the age old question what is it that binds human beings to other animals? With no previous experience and only a few hopelessly out-of-date books on falconry as a guide, he set about trying to bend the will of his young bird Gos to his own.
