About this deal

Heck, you can argue it already sounds like this now…since bro country has lessened in popularity, the trend seems to be to go with straight pop…catchy melody, meaningless lyrics about relationships between drunk young folks, and the previously faint banjo/fiddle/steel guitar that was once a requisite in all pop-country songs seemingly becoming less prevalent. And that’s all the worse when you compare this to the music that Jason Boland made after he stopped drinking. we are now hearing lyrics from a recovering alcoholic about ‘taking shots with the night owls’, partying in Cali, and ‘maniacs in the bed’ matched with overproduction effectively squandering the talent of a world class musician. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic gave the album three out of five stars, criticizing Urban's attempt to address complicated sexual politics.

Fuck all artists who waste their talents making garbage drivel, and fuck the fact that an album like this has be reviewed on this site. This decision doesn’t have to be at the expense of commercial aptitude as some in the music industry love to portray. You can make a case that no one has done more damage to country music in more ways at least that Urban in recent years.

We talk about certain mainstream country artists growing old with their music, like we’ve seen with Tim McGraw, and even Blake Shelton recently. You’d be wise to use the term “country singer” loosely to describe Keith Urban, and even more wise to cut out the “male” part. Keith apparently seems to think those songs are the future of the genre, based on the bit I’ve heard of this record…and that’s scary. When the most country sounding song on an album is a tune penned by Ed Sheeran (“Parallel Line”), you’ve got problems.

This shitty attempt to add something resembling “country” to the Graffiti U track list is tasteless. Although chart performance is far from being the only measure of a song’s success, I think the numbers here do reflect the fact that Graffiti U’s antecedent singles have - for the most part - not quite been up to Urban’s usual standard. Thank goodness, NOT all United Statiens are false patriotism, I find many that do agree and think that these mentionned above are right). If anything disqualifies Graffiti U as the first honest to goodness monogenre record, it would be there’s not enough country in it to count that as an integrated influence.
