About this deal

The Consolatio ad Liuiam and literary history’, in T. E. Franklinos & L. Fulkerson (eds), Constructing Authors and Readers in the Appendices Vergiliana, Tibulliana, and Ovidiana (Oxford, 2020), 223-41 Hon. Sir Gordon William Nottage Palmer was born on 18 July 1918. 1 He was the son of Ernest Cecil Nottage Palmer, 2nd Baron Palmer and Marguerite Osborne. 1 He married Lorna Eveline Hope Bailie, daughter of Major Charles William Hugh Bailie and Nancy Laura Hargreaves Ferrar, on 6 May 1950. 1 He died on 3 July 1989 at age 70. 1 Palmer remained active in the Lords for many years where he sat as a crossbencher and was elected as one of the 90 hereditary peers to remain in the House in 1999. He spoke on a wide variety, if a touch eccentric, subjects but was an early champion of biofuels.

A major concern was to put the 100 rooms to good use by letting some out, then open the house to the public and, not least, making it available for some highly lucrative film locations. In its Edwardian heyday the staircase took three servants three weeks to bring to a polish. But while the property’s value made him enormously rich “on paper”, Palmer was struggling to survive on a dwindling income from farming and tourism. Stephen attended Collyer's Grammar School in Horsham, and then did his undergraduate and doctoral studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, before teaching at the Universities of Sheffield and Leed. His doctorate was an examination of the manuscript tradition of the Latin elegist Propertius, which led on to an Oxford Classical Text of the poet together with a detailed textual commentary entitled ‘Cynthia’.

Adrian Bailie Nottage Palmer, 4th Baron Palmer (8 October 1951 – 10 July 2023), was a British aristocrat and landowner in Scotland. [1] Lord Palmer succeeded his uncle in the peerage in 1990, and was one of the original ninety hereditary peers elected to remain in the House of Lords after the passing of the House of Lords Act 1999; he sat as a crossbencher until his death. [2] [3] Early life [ edit ]

The 4th Baron Palmer, who has died aged 71, was a scion of the biscuit firm Huntley & Palmers and one of the original 90 peers elected to remain in the House of Lords after the reforms of 1999; as an idiosyncratic – and self-aware – crossbencher he argued among other things that the living wage had made tipping in restaurants redundant, and that if “smoking was completely outlawed, the entire British economy would literally collapse”. It was in a sorry state in the 1970s but boasted a grand interior with some fine rooms and gardens plus a prized silver staircase. But much refurbishment had to be done and Palmer set about renovating Manderston and returning it to its magnificent best. As at December 2015 he is continuing to recreate the role of John Steed in Big Finish's audio series The Avengers - The Lost Episodes. Film• Maurice (1987)

On his role as "Urban Mahy" in Island at War (2004): My father fought in the Second World War. He flew Spitfires in the Navy. I've got a photo of him at the age of 18 sitting in a Spitfire looking very much like I did at that age, so I feel quite emotional about the era. Reading the Island at War (2004) script was like revisiting England in my father's early years. "Urban" is quite a dreamy character. He seems as though he is quite lost in life. I've often thought of myself in this way, so I found it easy to relate to him. He's a person in search of a role in life, but reassuringly he finally finds himself. He has two gorgeous daughters, whom he is extremely fond of, and tries his utmost to protect them at all times. The film explores the narratives of many different people involved in the occupation of the Channel Islands. It takes an open view from each perspective and isn't stereotypical of the English or the Germans. It lets you imagine what it was like to be part of a war from many different angles. Lord Palmer, who has died after a stroke aged 71, inherited the magnificent Manderston House near Duns in 1978 – said to be one of the grandest stately homes in Scotland. From 1977 to 1986 he was the Scottish representative to the European Landowners' Organisation (ELO). He was member of the Executive Council of the Historic Houses Association from 1981 to 1999, and of the council of the Scottish Landowners' Federation from 1986 to 1992. Between 1989 and 2005, he was also secretary of the Royal Caledonian Hunt. For the Historic Houses Association for Scotland, The Lord Palmer was vice-chairman in 1993 and 1994, and chairman between 1994 and 1999. [7] Motto Per Crucem Ad Palmam (Through The Cross To The Palm) Palmer was also President of the Palm Tree Silk Company in St Lucia, of the British Association of Biofuels and Oils (BABFO), and of the transport division of the Renewable Energy Authority. He was a member of the National Farmers Union of Scotland and between 1994 and 2023 he was chairman of the Country Sports Defence Trust. Between 1990 and 1996, he was a member of the Royal Company of Archers. [4] Marriages and children [ edit ]

Adrian Palmer’s first marriage was dissolved in 2004. In 2006 he married, secondly, Loraine McMurrey, a Texan who once dated the CNN tycoon Ted Turner; that marriage was dissolved in 2013. He is survived by his children, of whom the eldest, Hugo, born in 1980, a racehorse trainer at Manor House Stables in Cheshire, succeeds as the 5th Baron. He was not always up to speed with modern culture, though. When asked by one of his children if he knew the band Blur, he replied saying: “Do you mean Tony Blair?” Palmer was educated at Eton and the University of Edinburgh, where he received a Certificate in Farming Practice.
