About this deal

Fantastic post shave properties: the menthol cools everything down, the witch hazel heals and the lanolin conditions the skin.

What do you use after a shave? Do you use anything at all? Much to the surprise of some traditional wet-shavers armed with brush and bowl, the answer to that question for many young people is “no”. Shaving itself has evolved from the days of when it was a luxury for the upper classes, when only barbers having attended specific schools and licensed to remove hair were capable of safely shaving the face for a fee beyond the realms of the most peasant-like. Eventually, the smell and blue color we know Aqua Velva itself to have today was added post-Prohibition in the US to keep guys desperate for a swig of booze from chugging the stuff, although these days it isn’t even made with potable alcohol (nor are many toiletries anymore). That leather-meets-mint-and-lemon smell of Aqua Velva became so appealing at one point that Williams just recommended using their product as cologne too, adding a material they marketed as “Humectin” to extend the longevity of the smell. The popularity of Aqua Velva opened the door for other purpose-made aftershaves like Mennen’s Skin Bracer in 1932, itself a shameless rip off of Houbigant’s Fougère Royale with mint replacing much of the citrus top, and being a much simpler “fougère” structure overall.

Before they got into the body wash business, Old Spice made cologne and aftershave. Chances are your grandpa probably wore the stuff. If I were a bettin’ man, I’d even wager that the manly, charming scent of Old Spice played some kind of role in your eventual birth. Old Spice has been sold in its iconic buoy-shaped bottle since 1938. What it smells like: Stetson’s scent kinda catches you off guard. With all their rugged cowboy marketing, I expected Stetson to have a woodsy, leathery, or even musk scent. But to my surprise it was more of a light, flowery fragrance with notes of lavender, jasmine, and citrus. It’s not bad, just different from the typical male fragrances on the list. After a century of making cowboy hats, the Stetson Company decided to get into the men’s fragrance business in 1981 with a cologne for men. Stetson took advantage of their cowboy heritage by pitching their cologne as the scent for men who are independent and love adventure. And as the gift idea for those who didn’t know what else to get the man in their lives (“Stetson makes it easy, for yo uuuu!”).

Thomas Derdak, Tina Grant: International Directory of Company Histories, volume 46, 2002, p. 205 [1] Many believe that today’s Old Spice cologne isn’t the same as the original.Aficionados swear there was a subtle change made to the formula after Procter & Gamble acquired the brand. Even with the tweaking, this is still a solid, timeless, and manly fragrance. Good to have in your collection. This article was originally published in January2012. It is also classic to use so-called"cooling agents" in these preparations. Menthol is the most classic, but substances derived from menthyl such as menthyl lactate are possible. From

Aqua Velva

These are typically hydroalcoholic solutions that may contain an antiseptic agent, which helps prevent infections due to small bills, although the effect of alcohol is usually sufficient. The alcohol content varies between40and60% Vol. and may also contain a healing agent to help repair microlesions caused by shaving. One of the substances classically used is allantoin whose epitheliogenic (healing) virtues are well known. I actually took to using aftershaves more when switching, not because I need them, but because I like that finishing touch they provide. Aqua Velva is an American brand of grooming products targeted at men. Its best-known product is the Ice Blue aftershave introduced in 1917 by the J.B. Williams Company. As you might have guessed, high-end designers wasted no time jumping into this arena too, with everything from Chanel Pour Monsieur in 1955 through to big hits like Calvin Klein’s Eternity for Men in 1989 getting aftershave variants, often not even having any added enhancements like menthol or skin conditioners. Most of this also coincided with men’s fragrance becoming more ubiquitous, and shaving habits getting increasingly focused on expediting the process with disposable or electric products, meaning that wearing aftershave seemed like a superfluous step when you were just going to douse on your favorite designer fragrance after a shave anyway, with matching the cologne to the aftershave feeling a bit like overkill unless you were “that guy” who also wore the matching deodorant, used the matching bar soap and shave cream, etc. The Decline of Traditional Aftershaves

You’ll find overpowering notes of sage and cinnamon when you apply it. As it fades, it leave a pleasant musk and cedarwood scent. I have never used aftershave before, but found this completely by accident. I was looking for something that smelled like Brylcreem, because as it turns out there is no such thing as a Brylcreem aftershave, but I knew I wanted something I can use everyday that has a 'fresh' slightly musky, slightly soapy scent and not too strong. The aftershave of choice of my grandfather, William Hurst, and my own favorite drugstore classic. English Leather got its start in 1949, and it hasn’t changed much since then. Same formula; same rectangular bottle; same big ol’ wooden lid. English Leather gift boxes were a popular holiday gift for years. Maybe you got your dad a box for Christmas 1987. Most of the marketing for English Leather featured an attractive woman telling male viewers or readers that, “All her men wear English Leather.” Translation: If you want hot babes, slap on some English Leather, by golly. Example: Not much to add, except for that embarrassing lapse in judgment earlier this year where they were considering putting Aqua Velva in plastic bottles, until we here at B&B flooded their offices with complaints and hate mail. I think that's a moment in AV history that Williams/Combe would rather forget, though.

Customer reviews

The smell is what I'd describe as "everyday": a light, pleasant, refreshing and slightly soapy. A very clean smell that I'd be happy to wear every day. What it smells like:It’s a pretty simple fragrance. Starts off with a citrusy smell that slowly fades to a woodsy, leathery scent. As the day wore on, it started to smell more like baby powder. Nice and fresh.
