The camera card found by Abbie reveals Martin's photos of the local oil terminal, harbor authority, Bryd, Rodgers and Lloyd. Martin is actually DI Calvin Walker of the Counterterrorism Unit, monitoring a potential threat on Shetland. He suspects Rodgers – who'd been advocating for climate action online – Connor and Bryd were involved in an eco-terrorist cell. Tosh suspects a message in a library book cell members were using to communicate referred to Carol Anne Manè, an ex of Donnie's who had been asking him about Tosh and who works at the oil terminal. Carol Anne is arrested but denies everything. Ally Fleet, whose family lost their fishing business in the Braer disaster, aims his boat at an oil tanker heading for the terminal but veers away at the last minute. No explosives are found on his boat, but someone else is seen constructing a bomb. Who organized the raid on Logan Creggan's house? A journalist dies in a suspicious car accident, and when it turns out he was an old friend of Pérez's, a forensic scientist is called in to ensure an objective view of the case. As the team awaits her results, they look into the reasons for the victim's return to the island and find he was chasing a lead about plans for a controversial new gas pipeline.

Pérez and the team are forced to re-open a 23-year-old cold case when convicted murderer, Thomas Malone, is released from prison. The case concerns teenager Lizzie Kilmuir, who was found strangled to death in a lime kiln on Unst Island. Upon returning to Shetland, Thomas tries to make amends with Lizzie's twin sister, Kate. Meanwhile, local journalist Sally McColl attends the Shetland Folk Festival with a group of her friends but doesn't return home later that evening. The next day, she is found strangled to death on a kiln, in what looks like a copy of Lizzie's murder. Pérez is forced to break the news to Drew, Sally's father, a former police officer who led the investigation into Lizzie's murder and now believes Thomas killed Sally. A group of men drags Thomas from his home and tries to bury him alive. Sadly the hugely popular actor has confirmed that this was the last time he will play the cop. However, the good news for fans is that the series will continue with a different actor in the leading role. It was eventually revealed that Ashley Jensen was becoming the new leading cop. She plays DI Ruth Calder in Shetland season 8. After he's spotted trying to leave Shetland on the ferry, Curtis leads officers on a chase through the streets but is eventually apprehended by an officer after Tosh and Jimmy head Curtis off in the car. Although he confesses to the break-in at Galbraith's house and to dealing drugs, Curtis maintains he wouldn't kill anyone. She says:"I am absolutely thrilled to be joining Shetlandas DI Ruth Calder. It's such a hugely successful show and I am aware I have very big boots to fill since the departure of DI Perez, who was very much loved by fans of the show.
